The Beach Boys are America’s Beatles, and while the line-up has changed, and separated, and divorced, and talked smack, and reunited, and broke apart again – the only thing that matters is the music – and man, there is so much of it, and it’s all great (minus ‘Kokomo’), however you hear it, and by whomever is playing it – and however it is, I’LL TAKE IT!

I saw the Beach Boys numerous times as a child in the 80s, when they played the Mall in DC 4th of July, after 4th of July, after 4th of July, then other times in the 90s, when Brian Wilson was on a mental sabbatical, and then again when he was back and solo in the 00s, and again in the 10s!  And I’ve seen the Mike Love Beach Boys in the 10s too, and then when the Mike Love Beach Boys reunited with guys who are ACTUALLY Beach Boys, and then again.  And I’ve loved it all!!!

And now Mike Love doesn’t love Brian and Al no more, and so Mike Love does his thing (which is important, but not as important to me), and Brian (and his amazing backing band) goes on and does his thing, and rightfully keeps Al with him, which is MOST important to me

Juss being in a room with Brian Wilson feels like an honor – in the same way as being with Paul McCartney, or Simon and Garfunkel. I say this same thing all the time, but we are so blessed to live in a time when all these people are alive, and we can still hear them do their thing – and that thing – is EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

This tour tackled Pet Sounds and its 50 anniversary.  I’m more of a SMiLE guy, but who am I to complain.  Oh wait, THIS WHOLE WEBSLIGHT IS BUILT ON COMPLAINTS (and boobs!)! And so Brian and his awesome band, and Al Jardine rocked the sh!t out of it, and oh yeah, that Blondie Chaplin guy was there too!  Former Brian Wilson right-hand man Jeffrey Foskett recently re-joined the Mike Love Beach Boys, but the falsetto parts void was EASILY filled by Al’s awesome son Matt!!!!

Brian and Al and Mike Love won’t be with us forever, but the music truly will.  And so will their offspring, and you know what, I’d see them play their parents’ music, cause the music is all that matters (although if we can figure out a way to freeze Brian Wilson and keep him for future centuries, methinks that that would be the way to go!)

It’s the David Mackenzie directed film from Taylor Sheridan‘s script - Hell or High Water!! 

There’s not much hell or water, but plenty of thirsting, for dollars, and doing things right, even if they have to be done in a wrong way!  

The plot is this – two guys rob banks and then re-pay outstanding debts to the very same banks they juss stole from with the money they stole!  It’s like robbing Peter to pay Paul Peter!!!  Woah!!!!  

And man, those Texas vistas are beautiful!

And this girl - Melanie Papalia – who played a hooker – has some nice vistas of her own!

We saw Cat return to form(/American soil, on his first official North American tour since 1976!) in Boston back in the winter of 2014, and it was an unforgettable night filled with much wisdom, soul, and incredible music.  We had only one want after that night – to see him again, mainly cause he didn’t play ‘Matthew & Son‘ (my favorite Cat song that isn’t ‘Lady D’Arbanville‘, which he hasn’t played since… 1976!)

Well, the opportunity arose and we seized it, and Mr Cat/Yusuf/Amazing came thru with his end of the bargain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

not only that – but he took a little dig at Tears For Fears while playing it, for their song ‘Mad World’ sounding quite like his ‘Matthew & Son’ – mouthing ‘I think it’s kind of funny, I think it’s kind of strange, yes I think it’s kind of funny, that this sounds the same!‘  YOU FCUKING GO CAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 2014 tour’s name was ‘Peace Train…Late Again’, as in, he’s still be riding that train, but that train and its conductor was a little past due at its American stations.  Well, this year’s tour is called ‘A Cat’s Attic: 50 Year Anniversary Acoustic Tour’, and with less explaining about his absence this time around, he played the true troubadour, taking us on his musical life story with his 60s catalog as its soundtrack.  The cuts he dropped were a bit deeper than when we saw him before, and luckily he didn’t bother with the tunes on his last album, which were in heavy rotation on that 2014 jaunt

In these uncertain times, it’s wonderful that we can take solace in a musical genius who promotes peace, love and understanding, and so happens to be a Muslim.  The (probably not very Muslim) crowd was with Cat/Yusuf from start to finish.  The world would be a better place if it was with Cat/Yusuf’s music and its message from here on out.  Never too late to board the peace train.  WOOT! WOOT!!

Here’s hoping the next tour is called ‘I Want To Be Your Man/Lady D’Arbanville’.  And if so, that tour – oh you tour - you will be my fill, yes, you will be my fill
