Long Run, May You

Crosby, Stills & Nash
Beacon Theater
November 6th

Who needs Young or to be young when Crosby, Stills & Nash can still kicks it like mad without Neil, as a creaky bone thugs in harmonizing trio of old fogeys.  It’s true!!!  And David, Stephen & Graham totally kicksed it, like crizzzzazzzy (their ‘Ruby Tuesday’ cover was particularly phenomzies!)!!!  Stills barely kept still, Nash didn’t wear shoes and did his hand gesture while singing thing, and David Crosby flazzumed like Bill Cosby, while keeping plenty still, barely moving from his rug (each guy had their own rug!), but why should the Cros bother moving when he is a walrus, and he is THE walrus, coo-coo-ca-choooo!!  Seriously, he has one of the most bestest and iconic mustaches in the history of mustaches.  Wonder if he and Mike Holmgren hang out and wax poetic about waxing mustaches?

U2
Ghettolands II
July 21st

Dude, it was like 1991/92 all over again (started off with 4 straight Achtung babies!! BUT NO ‘ZOO STATION’????), and then it wasn’t (How To Assemble A Great Concert With No Lines On The Horizon That Can’t Be Left Behind), and no one was bothered whatsoever, cause U2’s 21st century output is stadium rocking ready, and boy, did that stadium rock, and their performance was juss as on target and point and awsomes as it was when we first saw them on the Zoo TV tour at RFK stadium.  And even wethinks it was even better than the thing thang we saw at Ghettolands I 2 years ago.  These guys are good, perhaps maybe even TOOO good

Even Better Than The Real Thing / The Fly / Mysterious Ways / Until The End Of The World / I Will Follow / Get On Your Boots / Magnificent / I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For / The Promised Land (snippet) / Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of  (snippet) / Stay (Faraway, So Close!) / In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning (snippet) / Beautiful Day / Space Oddity (snippet) / Elevation / Pride (In The Name Of Love) / Miss Sarajevo / Zooropa / City Of Blinding Lights / Vertigo / I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight / Discothèque (snippet) / Psycho Killer (snippet) / Life During Wartime (snippet) / Sunday Bloody Sunday / Scarlet / Walk On

encores: One / Hallelujah (snippet) / Where The Streets Have No Name / Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me / With Or Without You / Moment of Surrender / Out Of Control

ps – we never got around to using the Achtung Baby condoms we bought in ’92.  can anyone help us with this problem?

Listened To The Band

The Monkees
Beacon Theater
June 16th

We saw Davy Jones’ sassy solo show 2 years ago and Micky Dolenz kick it at Coney Island last summer (sharing a bill with the Beach Boys + John Stamos, The Turtles, and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere of the Raiders… wow, that was quite a mammoth oldies bash, eh?).  Both of them concerts were sirprizingly beyond solid nostalgia trips filled with that oh so sweet and manufactured Monkees sound.  Well, what would it be like then to see them play together, with Peter Tork added for plenty of good measure (Mike Nesmith took another pass on a reunion cash grab, since he’s swimming in Liquid Paper money)?  Uh, how bout helllllaa sweet awesome rad super mint???!!!  Ells yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Even though they played a bunch of songs that rewarded the more dedicated fan, Davy, Micky & Petey totally gave the people what they wanted – the greatest hits (luckily for us all, they didn’t play ‘DW Washburn’) and a whole lot of fun(ny).  Could you ask for anything more?  Well, we did want them to play ‘Porpoise Song’ for 3 hours straight, but you can’t always get what you want, right?  Well, sometimes, but not this time!

It’s amazing to think that we have only 2 Beatles left on earth, but still got all four Monkees.  Sh%t is crazy like that, but we muss celebrate the living while we still have them with us, even if they is fake Beatles.  Do yourself a favor and support old peoples like these guys and other old peoples (Brian Wilson!!!) who can still kick out the jams (although we still refuse to see Bob Dylan play)

a question for you…

what happens when The Monkeemobile loses its wheel?

A: we believe this picture speaks a thousand volumes of how it went…

ten bajillion bonus points of awesomeness for being able to shake Mr Wilson’s hand after the show, and telling him that he was the best.  this isn’t a lie, cause him and we both have hands AND he IS the best

Old Friends

Paul Simon
Beacon Theater
May 10th

Paul Simon really aint that crazy after all these years.  He’s juss solidly normal, and mad awesomeszsz.   And he still sounds eggzactly like he always has.  And he still loves his frikkin slow jams.  We do too, but kindsa only the S & Garfunkel stuff (he gave us only 2 of them bones), and not that boring-a$$ ‘Slip Sliding Away’ type shaz or the snail-like tracks he chose to play from his new album, which is hactually a pretty good one… for a 69 year old!!  LETS SEE YER DAD COME UP WITH SOMETHING BETTERER!!!

Simon’s solo catalog is vast, and at its best when he breaks out the latter Graceland & Rhythm of the Saints stuffs.  Oh man, we almost jazzed in our pants when he kicked out ‘Obvious Child’ and ‘Boy In The Bubble’ (which made up for that concert that could have been the greatestest concert of all time if he didn’t let other people sing his songs)

We were kinda expecting a sirprize guest at the show.  Maybe some Art G-ness?  Or how bout Chevy Chase for some ‘Al’ calling (it’s the song that made us fall in love with Paul as a youth)???  There was none of that, and it really wasn’t necessary anywayz, cause we all got a beautiful 2 hour show from one of music’s all-time greeeeeeeeeeeaaattts

Speaking of his iconic status… we don’ts thinks he gets the kinda love that he should from the world.  THIS IS A LIVING LEGEND, FOLKS!!!  WE MUST CELEBRATE THE/HIS LIVING!!!!  ONE DAY PAUL SIMON WON’T BE ON THIS EARTH AND YER GONNA BE SO PISSED YOU DIDN’T CARE THAT MUCH ABOUT HIM WHEN HE WAS LIVINGS!!!!

We literally pray night & gay for his health and for the day that S & G hit the road again and drop some MSG dates on us.  we’d honestly pay $300 to see them.  only thing else we’d pay that much for is amour et spaghetti con Leonor Watling [lightly NSFW]

set list

Crazy Love, Vol. II / Dazzling Blue / 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover / So Beautiful or So What / Slip Slidin’ Away / Vietnam (Jimmy Cliff cover) / Mother and Child Reunion / That Was Your Mother / Hearts and Bones / Mystery Train-Wheels / Rewrite / Peace Like a River / The Obvious Child / The Only Living Boy in New York (Simon & Garfunkel song) / Love Is Eternal Sacred Light / Father and Daughter / Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes / Gumboots

Encore – The Sound of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel song) / Kodachrome / Gone At Last / Here Comes the Sun (The Beatles cover) / The Boy in the Bubble
